About This Piece

The goat plays a strange role in mythology and legend; perhaps its ambivalence, appearing on both sides of the spectrum, give it the appeal it enjoys. Most ancient cultures form the Assyrians via the ancient Greeks and Vikings have a goat appear in their legends. Berlin’s goat skulls borrow form these traditions and provide a twist on their lore. His use of gold leafing creates a sparkling, iridescent work that flickers in changing light, a silvery grey dawn or a fiery golden sunset reflect through the piece. With this painting Berlin has given us a time travelling creature that is bang up to date with its hooves still embedded in the mythical times before modern man. Oil and acrylic with 24ct gold and white gold leaf.
