Oil on panel “Calle de Ibiza”, Nicolás Forteza, Post-impressionism, s. XX- Mallorca, Spain
Extraordinary oil on panel signed by Nicolás Forteza, made in Mallorca at the beginning of the 20th century. with the title “Ibiza Street” it presents a typical Ibizan house, in broad daylight, which occupies the entire frame. However, the composition is divided diagonally if the colors are taken into account: on the left a large colored shadow predominates, which is a reflection of the building next door. with a loose brushstroke, like the impressionists, he uses primary colors. Thus, the green on the door of the doors and the palm tree stand out. Signed in the lower left area, who on the back titles it as “Street nº25”.
Nicolás Forteza Forteza (1918 - 2010) was a painter specialized in the landscapes of the island of Mallorca. He develops his work between the impressionist and post-impressionist currents, under the parameters of light. His work took on deep significance in Mallorca, where he presented his first exhibition at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in 1951. He would later exhibit in cities such as Barcelona, Puerto Rico, Stockholm, London and Paris.
Forteza manages to blend in with the landscape and revive the lost ideal in his paintings. He observes, chooses the details and fixes them on the canvas with the desire to stand up to the passage of time and capture, through light and color, the present. To do this, he usually uses the blue, green, red spectrum... and, on the other hand, within each of the main colors, he knew how to impact with his brush or spatula, a very wide range of tones and intensities.
