Bathroom set: “Pomeroy blue” ewer and soap dish, Royal Doulton porcelain, 19th century. XX – London, England
Exquisite bathroom set consisting of a wash basin and a soap dish, made of bone china porcelain by the Royal Doulton house, in London, England. The ewer has two different parts, a jug and a bowl, to pour and contain the water, since it is a container traditionally used to wash hands. Jugs usually have a pouring spout and a handle, while basins are shallow and wide. For its part, the soap dish, with a lid, also has a drainer inside, to keep the bar of soap dry.
Extraordinary hand molding and painting technique, with glossy enamelling that highlights the decorative details of the "Pomeroy Blue and White" model. This design, cataloged with the code D5269, was manufactured between 1933 and 1957. It is distinguished by a floral border in shades of blue and a central decoration also in blue, based on the basket of plenty, all on a white base. Like many of Royal Doulton's classic patterns, this one has also been discontinued, making it a collectible item.
Royal Doulton, one of the most recognized names in ceramics, traces its origins to 1815, when John Doulton invested his savings in a small pottery factory in Lambeth, London. At first, the company focused on manufacturing utilitarian items, such as ceramic pipes and storage jars. As the business grew, it expanded into more decorative products, such as vases and figurines, which gained widespread attention in the 1870s. In 1901, the company received a Royal Warrant from King Edward VII, which allowed it to add the prestigious prefix "Royal" to its name, cementing its reputation as a producer of high-quality ceramics. Over time, Royal Doulton became especially known for its character figurines and jugs, which became collectors' items around the world. Throughout the 20th century, Royal Doulton continued to innovate, incorporating new materials and collaborating with renowned designers and artists. The company went through several mergers, most notably in the 1960s when it absorbed other famous ceramics manufacturers such as Mintons and Royal Crown Derby.
